Propstore to auction rare James Dean final-hour photographs

A set of five vintage contact sheets from celebrated photojournalist Sanford H. Roth document James Dean’s last hours.

These images provide an uncommon and profoundly important historical view of the incident that ended his life.”— Grey Smith, Director of Posters US at PropstoreLOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, October 1, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Propstore, a top global auction house for entertainment memorabilia, is presenting a scarce assembly of five original black-and-white contact sheets shot by noted photojournalist Sanford H. Roth in its forthcoming Fall Collectible Posters Auction. These pictures capture some of the final images of cherished actor James Dean, taken during his last hours alive and after his deadly car wreck in 1955.

On September 30, Roth followed Dean—with whom he had developed a close friendship—as the actor drove his recently acquired Porsche 550 Spyder from Los Angeles toward a sports car competition in Salinas, California, snapping photos along the journey. At a filling station, while Dean was driving the Porsche, Roth took some of the last surviving images of the actor alive. Later that day, following Dean’s lethal crash, Roth arrived among the first at the scene and recorded the aftermath.

Notably, several shots on these original vintage contact sheets are exceptionally uncommon, delivering a singular photographic chronicle of the events around Dean’s death. The sheets also preserve Roth’s handwritten notations, and provenance traces to the Estate of Sanford H. Roth. Valued at $4,000 – $8,000, the group of original photographic contact sheets, together with two extra strips of images, will be auctioned on Friday, October 9.

Also included are informal portraits of Dean in Roth’s New York studio and apartment, as well as during his makeup preparation for his part in his last film, “Giant” (1956).
The sale additionally features original posters from throughout Dean’s brief yet extremely impactful movie career, such as a one-sheet poster for East of Eden (1955), appraised at $300 – $600, an Italian locandina for Rebel Without a Cause (1955), appraised at $300 – $600, and a collection of pressbooks for Rebel Without a Cause and Giant (1956), which debuted after the actor’s death, appraised at $200 – $400.

Together, these lots cover Dean’s three major films and provide a window into both the Hollywood profession that turned him into an icon and the closing chapter of his existence, documented by a photographer present at the time.

Propstore’s Fall Collectible Posters Auction, assessed at roughly $1.5 million, includes nearly 1,000 lots and runs October 9 – 11, 2026. Day One will be a live-streamed online event, while Days Two and Three are online only, starting at 9:30 AM PDT / 5:30 PM BST each day. Bids may be placed from anywhere worldwide via Propstore.com.

The complete catalog is currently viewable online, and bidding is active at https://propstoreauction.com/auctions/info/id/527

Grey Smith, Director of Posters US at Propstore, commented: “James Dean’s death remains one of the most poignant moments in Hollywood history, cutting short the career of an actor who, at just 24, had already become an extraordinary cultural icon. These photographs offer a rare and deeply significant historical record of the aftermath of the accident that claimed his life, providing a perspective on an event that has remained etched in the public consciousness for more than 70 years. Presented alongside original material from East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause and Giant, the photographs give collectors an opportunity to own pieces connected not only to Dean’s remarkable career, but to the story of how his life and legacy came to an untimely end.”
