Solo filmmaker completes feature animation entirely in Unreal Engine, no AI used

A single creator leveraging real-time game engine technology can scale production as Indie Film Factory & Dynamic Pudding Studios demonstrate feature animation is possible

The independent production outfit Indie Film Factory, together with its animation branch Dynamic Pudding Studios, has announced that Trash Alley Heroes is now complete. This animated feature directly takes on Hollywood’s conventional billion-dollar animation workflow.
Directed, produced, and nearly entirely animated by Emmy® Award winner Kelly Schwarze—backed by just two other animators as the core crew—this high-energy comedy represents one of the smallest teams in motion picture history to finish a full-length animated film.

Importantly, Trash Alley Heroes ranks among the first animated features worldwide rendered fully inside Epic Games’ Unreal Engine. By swapping standard offline rendering for real-time game engine technology and video-to-motion-capture methods, the production sidestepped Hollywood’s well-known inefficiencies, attaining feature-grade visuals while deliberately forgoing generative AI.

"Hollywood feature animation has become unsustainable, with studio budgets ballooning past $100 million and projects taking four to five years to complete," said Schwarze. "With Trash Alley Heroes, our goal was to build a blueprint for the future of independent cinema. We proved that by combining real-time game engines with small, highly focused teams of human artists, a solo filmmaker can build a feature-length world that is fast, cost-effective, and commercially viable. Best of all, we can do this without the need for generative AI video!"

Trash Alley Heroes follows a group of talking trash cans on a frantic rescue mission to save an innocent human framed for a crime by a corrupt police officer. The movie features a cast of emerging voice talent.

Beyond establishing a technical model for indie filmmakers everywhere, Schwarze is using the film’s pipeline as a demonstration to create Las Vegas’s first fully operational, tech-forward animation studio, building a sustainable, low-cost alternative to conventional physical film infrastructure.
Trash Alley Heroes will hold its exclusive red-carpet debut at Brenden Theatres inside the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas on Tuesday, November 10, followed by a worldwide digital release on YouTube on November 20.
