When a cannon’s boom is part of the show but the volume isn’t welcome, a new product line aims to keep the spectacle without the ear-splitting blast.
Dunlap Cannon Co. has answered the call from event planners and production crews with its new Light Load 10 Gauge Blanks, a quieter alternative designed for moments where tradition meets modern noise concerns. Based in SANDUSKY, MI, the company announced the expansion on October 30, 2026, via EINPresswire.com.
These black powder blanks carry a reduced powder charge, yielding a softer report and less smoke compared to the company’s standard 10 gauge rounds. That makes them a fit for parades, weddings, and other gatherings where the visual and auditory flair of a signal cannon is wanted—but full-strength noise is not.

“We developed this product in response to feedback from organizations using signal cannons at parades, weddings, and other special events, as well as special effects companies serving the film industry and customers involved in theatrical productions,” said John Dunlap, founder of Dunlap Cannon Co. “One customer uses a Winchester signal cannon during performances of Tchaikovsky’s ‘1812 Overture.’ These customers wanted the cannon effect, but found our standard blanks too loud for certain settings. Our Light Load blanks give them a reduced-report option for performances, events, and locations where noise sensitivity is a consideration.”
The new rounds join the company’s existing lineup, giving buyers a choice based on their venue’s needs. Still, the quieter boom doesn’t remove the need for hearing protection or adherence to the cannon manufacturer’s safety instructions and local event guidelines.
Each shell comes with a brass base, plastic hull, and star-crimped closure for better sealing and water resistance. The fired shell length is 2 inches, and they’re sold in five-round boxes.
Dunlap Cannon Co. Light Load 10 Gauge Blanks retail for $14.99 per box. More details and ordering options are posted at WinchesterSignalCannon.com.
About Dunlap Cannon Co.: The firm builds Winchester Model 98 signal cannons under license from Olin Corporation, along with offering blanks, accessories, replacement parts, and repair services for cannon owners.
Why it matters: This product reflects a growing trend where ceremonial traditions adapt to modern expectations around noise and comfort. By providing a lower-decibel option, Dunlap Cannon Co. is helping keep historical pageantry viable in settings that might otherwise ban it outright.
