The documentary spotlighting underfunded schools in Black and Brown communities is getting a major financial boost this holiday season, thanks to a viral fundraising push timed to GivingTuesday. The founders behind the project have enlisted celebrity volunteers to help close their funding gap and finish post-production.
Terrell Lawrence and Lewis T. Powell, the creators of the highly anticipated ‘It Takes A Village’ documentary, have officially confirmed their involvement in this year’s GivingTuesday. The duo has joined the viral ‘100 Voices in 30 Days’ movement, an organization that has been actively campaigning to secure the remaining funds necessary to finish the film.
The viral campaign kicked off on October 20th, bringing together influential public figures who donated their time to champion the cause. As part of the GivingTuesday fundraising push, a $20,000 Seed and Spark campaign is set to launch on November 2nd.
The Seed and Spark initiative will wrap up on December 1st, which marks GivingTuesday. The ‘It Takes A Village’ documentary, currently in Post Production, is expected to be completed with support from volunteers, corporate sponsors, and individual donors.
Based in Georgetown, South Carolina, ‘It Takes A Village’ captures interviews with educators and community members who have been directly affected by the chronic underfunding of public schools. Lawrence and Powell have built a grassroots movement around their vision, and they’ll be backed by celebrity volunteers from the entertainment, sports, fashion, and music industries. Their goal is to give back to their communities by telling the stories of those impacted by inadequate school funding in predominantly Black and Brown neighborhoods.

ABOUT GIVINGTUESDAY: “A better future is being built by all of us right now, in the billions of small actions we take each day. Acts of care, love, and understanding extend outward, like the threads of a beautiful tapestry. Whether it’s offering a kind smile, a helping hand, or an hour of your time—these acts have a way of rippling out, becoming part of something much greater. That is the power of radical generosity.
GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. Join the movement and give, whether it’s some of your time, a donation, or the power of your voice in your local community.”

Why it matters: This campaign highlights how grassroots fundraising paired with celebrity influence can close the financing gap for independent documentaries that tackle systemic issues. By spotlighting underfunded schools in marginalized communities, the film aims to spark conversation and action around educational equity — a topic that resonates far beyond Georgetown, South Carolina.
