A fresh family fantasy film merges generative AI with conventional filmmaking, uniting Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas into a single holiday story.
TW3 Entertainment has finished production on Merry the Christmas Witch, a family fantasy film developed using a hybrid production approach that blends generative AI technology with classic filmmaking techniques.
The film, co-written and helmed by Tom Walsh, founder and CEO of TW3 Entertainment, centers on Merry, the first witch ever born on Christmas Day. After being exiled from the witch kingdom, she must return years later when Santa Claus is captured as part of a scheme to ruin Christmas, leading viewers through a fantasy realm that encompasses Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
Initially conceived as a conventional live-action movie, Merry the Christmas Witch was estimated to need an approximate $80 million budget. TW3 Entertainment’s AI Production Division teamed up with generative AI company Phatty Acid to realize the effects-laden project on screen via a hybrid method that fuses cutting-edge AI technology with time-tested filmmaking methods.
The production and post-production crew still included professional writers, directors, producers, storyboard artists, editors, actors, an orchestral composer, colorists, sound designers, and Foley artists.
“AI gave us the ability to build a world that would previously have required a studio-sized budget, but we still approached the movie as filmmakers,” said Walsh. “Story, performance, editing, music, sound and the human decisions behind them remain at the heart of the process.”
Merry the Christmas Witch additionally signals the start of a wider production plan for TW3 Entertainment. The company has created over 400 original characters and creatures spanning six fantasy worlds and has commenced production on its next generative AI-assisted feature, Losopolis.
