A former bellhop from the 1930s recalls the heyday of a legendary American hotel.
DALLAS, TX, UNITED STATES, July 15, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — More than twenty-five years after a long‑forgotten conversation was captured on a borrowed Mini DV camcorder, Bellhop at the Baker Hotel is finally being released.
This short documentary film brings to life the story of the famed Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells, Texas, through the recollections of Z.A. Calhoun, who served as a teenage bellhop during the hotel’s glittering early years in the 1930s. The interview, recorded in 1997, provides a unique eyewitness perspective on daily routines inside one of Texas’ most celebrated hotels, weaving together personal anecdotes that cover the Baker’s ascent, its decline, and its lasting imprint.
For filmmaker Blake Calhoun, Z.A.’s grandson, the project has been nearly three decades in the making.
“At the time we shot the interview, the goal was to create a documentary about the Baker Hotel,” Calhoun explains. “Life steered me onto other paths, and the tapes sat untouched on a shelf for over twenty years. In 2020, while digitizing my old tape collection, I came across them again—and I understood that the true narrative wasn’t simply about the hotel itself; it was about my grandfather’s time there and the remarkable life he went on to build afterward in Mineral Wells.”
Numerous documentaries have previously examined the Baker Hotel’s architecture, its period of abandonment, and the current restoration work. Bellhop at the Baker Hotel follows a different path. Instead of concentrating only on the structure, the film tells its story from the viewpoint of someone who actually worked there during its prime—offering what is regarded as one of the only on‑camera accounts given by a Baker Hotel employee from that era.
By combining historic photographs, archival footage, and Z.A. Calhoun’s personal stories, the documentary serves both as a tribute to an iconic American building and to the individuals whose lives were shaped by it.
Bellhop at the Baker Hotel is now available for streaming to audiences worldwide.
