Freestyle Digital Media drops Sundance-bred spy comedy ‘Checkout’ with Josh Pais

The spy genre has long been dominated by martini-sipping, tuxedo-clad operatives, but a new film is flipping that script with a decidedly more bureaucratic—and paranoid—take on espionage. Developed at the Sundance Institute and inspired by real Mossad cases, Checkout has now moved from a sold-out theatrical run to home screens, offering audiences a comedic yet unsettling look at the psychological toll of covert work.

Anti-Spy Comedy Starring Josh Pais (‘Joker’, ‘Dropout’, ‘Ray Donovan’, ‘The Good Wife’) Now Available on North American VOD Platforms Starting October 16, 2026

The Mossad’s elite trusted us with the unglamorous truth – real spies don’t ask for stirred martinis, they ask for receipts. Getting reimbursed is just as important to them as the mission itself.”— Filmmaker Jonathan Dekel and co-writer Shai Satran

Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, has officially launched Checkout—an award-winning dark spy comedy rooted in real-life intelligence operations—across North American digital HD internet, DVD, cable, and satellite platforms as of October 16, 2026.

The film wrapped its theatrical engagement to strong critical reception, with The New York Times positioning it as a satirical counterpart to the NAZA documentary. While that project took a serious lens to terrorism and targeted killings, Checkout uses humor to dissect the same high-stakes subject matter. Produced by UCM, the film now reaches a wider audience through digital and on-demand channels starting mid-October.

At the center of the story is Josh Pais, a seasoned Hollywood actor known for roles in Joker, Dropout, Ray Donovan, and The Good Wife. Pais didn’t just show up to play a spy—he underwent genuine espionage and combat training to prepare for the part. He’s joined by a roster of prominent Israeli performers, including Norman Issa, Dar Zuzovsky, Aki Avni, Yael Sharoni, and Oz Zehavi, who together bring a sharp cultural contrast between American and Israeli sensibilities to the screen.

Born out of the Sundance Institute Screenwriter’s Lab, Checkout marks the feature directorial debut of Jonathan Dekel, an Israeli Academy Award winner whose own service in the Israeli Special Forces, combined with extensive interviews with Mossad operatives, lends the film an authenticity rarely seen in the genre. Instead of glamorizing the profession, the movie zeroes in on the mundane anxieties, office politics, and deep-seated dread of failure that define the real intelligence world.

The plot follows Dov (Pais), an American Jew working as a low-level spy, who finds himself under intense scrutiny from skeptical Israeli superiors. Forced to recount his final, explosive mission again and again, Dov’s story begins to fracture—memories shift, alternate facts emerge, and competing versions of events blur together into a psychedelic dark comedy that feels tailor-made for a post-truth era.

Critics have taken notice. The Hollywood Reporter called it “a Wes Anderson-ish espionage romp,” while The Jerusalem Post likened it to “an early Woody Allen movie crossed with the best spy spoofs.”

“It took 12 years to make CHECKOUT because we wanted to make the anti-James Bond movie,” said Dekel, alongside co-writer Shai Satran. “The Mossad’s elite trusted us with the unglamorous truth – real spies don’t ask for stirred martinis, they ask for receipts. Getting reimbursed is just as important to them as the mission itself. And sometimes so is their ego. That’s what CHECKOUT reveals.”

Freestyle Digital Media secured the rights to Checkout through a direct negotiation with the filmmakers, bypassing traditional studio intermediaries.

Official FDM Trailer – CHECKOUT (2026)

Why it matters

This release signals a growing appetite for genre-defying films that challenge conventional portrayals of intelligence work. By grounding absurdist comedy in real-world operational details, Checkout offers a rare bridge between entertainment and the often-hidden realities of national security—one that independent distributors are increasingly willing to champion.
