The way audiences experience movies in theaters is evolving, and premium large-format screenings are claiming an increasingly significant share of overall box office revenue. IMAX, Dolby Cinema, ScreenX, and other premium formats have moved from niche offerings to essential components of major releases, and this year’s numbers tell a compelling story.
Record-Breaking Premium Numbers
IMAX Corporation reported that its global box office revenue for the first three quarters of the year exceeded 1.2 billion dollars, a new record for the company. The format accounted for roughly six percent of total global box office despite representing less than one percent of total screens, underscoring the outsized contribution of premium formats.
Dolby Cinema has similarly reported strong growth, with its high-contrast, high-dynamic-range presentations attracting audiences willing to pay a premium for the best possible viewing experience. Several major releases earned more than 15 percent of their domestic gross from Dolby Cinema locations alone.
What Drives Premium Attendance
The appeal of premium formats is straightforward: they offer an experience that cannot be replicated at home. The combination of massive screens, advanced projection systems, and immersive sound creates a viewing environment that enhances the emotional impact of films, particularly those designed with large-format presentation in mind.
Filmmakers have embraced these formats enthusiastically. Directors like Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, and James Cameron have been vocal advocates for shooting and presenting their films in IMAX, and their influence has encouraged a new generation of filmmakers to consider premium formats during production.
The Business Case
For theater operators, premium formats offer higher ticket prices and stronger per-screen revenues. For studios, premium formats extend the theatrical window by giving audiences a reason to see films on the big screen rather than waiting for home release. And for audiences, the premium experience justifies the trip to the theater and the higher ticket cost.
As premium format infrastructure continues to expand globally, this segment of the box office is expected to grow further, strengthening the overall theatrical ecosystem.
