Over the course of a year, three working-class American families are tracked as they get ready to leave the USA for destinations around the globe.

“5 Million Americans have quietly exited over the past 15 years.”— Ron Podmore

The acclaimed group behind the popular “Best of Central America” series, which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video & Apple TV, is excited to reveal its much-anticipated full-length documentary film, In Flight We Trust: An American Exodus.

Directed by up-and-coming documentary filmmaker Ron Podmore, this strong, independent film provides a raw and honest examination of America’s financial reality as seen through three Washington State households that decide to depart the country.

Mr. Podmore’s earlier projects have earned accolades from the Seattle Film Festival, the New York Film and Cinematography Awards, and others. His cinematic work has been granted “Official Selection” status, with honors including Best New Director, Original Concept, and Best New Feature for showcasing the finest aspects of Central American nations such as Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.

“In Flight We Trust: An American Exodus” goes beyond standard documentary formats, blending highly personal stories with beautiful visuals that highlight Seattle and Western Washington.

Three American households offer a glimpse into the intricate reasons behind a growing modern wave of emigration from the United States, which has already seen more than five million civilian U.S. passport holders leave over the last fifteen years. Podmore captures their dreams, disappointments, hopes, and quiet strength as these families pursue new lives beyond American borders, pushing back against traditional ideas of patriotism and belonging.

“This year-long project serves as a vital conversation starter that underscores the financial struggles facing millions of Americans and their wish to simply depart the USA,” says Mr. Podmore. “We are observing a pivotal historical moment in which the American dream is being reshaped not only inside our borders but across the globe. My team and I firmly believe in giving a voice to these unheard individuals as they look for potentially safer places to live.”

The production crew, recognized for their engaging travelogue series “Best of Central America” (“Life on Amapala Island, Honduras” debuts in August, 2026 with a duration of 53 minutes), uses sustainable and locally sourced film and logistics personnel. Their empathetic method of storytelling shows that Central America is indeed on the rise.

The film’s early success on major streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Ananda Media (France) points to strong general appeal and positive critical expectations for In Flight We Trust.

About the Director

Mr. Podmore is a former high-school teacher who won awards. Recognized for his lively personality and dry wit, he has developed a compelling visual filmmaking style over the past five years, with a dedication to human-centered storytelling. His work regularly examines themes of migration, identity, and the meaning of being a global citizen.

Additionally, he is the published author of two books, including one created in collaboration with Academy Award-winning actress Marlee Matlin.

About the Production

In Flight We Trust: An American Exodus has an expected runtime of 142 minutes and is currently being presented for a theatrical release in early spring of 2027, or possibly sooner.

Filmed on location in numerous cities around the world in partnership with Filmotions.com (Guatemala City), Mr. Podmore’s aim is to spark conversation about modern American life during an era when most working-class citizens are just one crisis away from bankruptcy.

Support for Seattle-area scenes comes from Washington Filmworks.

In his earlier travel documentary episodes, he concludes with:

“…travel with purpose. Life begins outside your comfort zone,”

—a sentiment that all the families featured truly embrace.
