Island City Stage, an acclaimed South Florida theater company, is initiating a nationwide search for a lead actor for its 15th anniversary season presentation of Paper Cut, a gripping drama by Andrew Rosendorf that examines war’s psychological scars. The award-winning theater organization is looking for male performers between the ages of 25 and 40, of any racial background, who offer true and authentic disability representation. Individuals with lower limb amputations (left, right, or bilateral) are especially urged to audition for the character of Kyle, a veteran grappling with the emotional burden of war long after leaving the battlefield. The production is scheduled to run from March 11 to April 4, 2027, with rehearsals taking place February 16 through March 10, 2027.
“Paper Cut is a powerful and intimate story about courage, love, and resilience that challenges perceptions of what it means to be a hero,” said Andy Rogow, founding artistic director of Island City Stage. “While this is not the first time that we have looked outside of our local area for actors and directors for specialty roles, it is the first production that requires an actor with a true physical disability. After undergoing rehabilitation at Walter Reed for injuries sustained in an IED blast, Kyle, now an amputee, must navigate the personal and emotional minefield of coming back home. Paper Cut offers an unflinching look at the physical and psychological toll borne by returning soldiers, along with the defining injury of the Afghanistan conflict: limb loss. And in Kyle's situation, considerably more.
Kyle, an amputee (leg), is a 26-year-old male veteran of the Afghan war; he is rugged and good-looking but marked by severe injuries and PTSD. He is gay, though not fully open about it, particularly because of his time in the military. The role will involve scenes of same-sex intimacy, and an intimacy coordinator will be on set.
Both union and non-union performers will be considered. The contract falls under AEA Single Engagement – Tier 1, Category B. Veterans are highly encouraged to apply. Actors residing beyond a 50-mile radius of the theater will be provided round-trip transportation and local housing. No per diem or vehicle is being offered at this time.
