Distinctive Granbury property with reclaimed architectural elements, Dan Coates’ Western art workspace and panoramic vistas roughly 60 minutes from Fort Worth
GRANBURY, TX, UNITED STATES, October 6, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Dan Coates devoted the majority of his years to life on horseback, and that is exactly how he ended them. On April 18, 2005, the Granbury resident—who wore many hats as a rancher, rodeo announcer and Western artist—passed away at age 67 while gathering cattle in Palo Duro Canyon on the storied JA Ranch.
For the very first time, the Lightning C Ranch has now hit the market.
Spanning 264± acres between Granbury and Glen Rose, the property is being handled by The Mock Ranches Group.
“Lightning C stands apart as a truly singular ranch,” remarked Kasey Mock, ALC, who serves as CEO of The Mock Ranches Group.
The listing follows closely on the heels of Granbury’s recent tributes to Dan and his legacy. On July 3, the Shanley Park Association dedicated “Ranch Repose,” a life-sized bronze sculpture of Dan crafted by artist Mike Tabor, at the Shanley Sculpture Garden in the heart of downtown Granbury. During the summer, the city additionally honored Dan as one of the key figures behind Granbury’s Fourth of July festivities.
A Life of Cowboy Heritage, Expressed Through Art and Land
Dan transitioned to ranching following a thriving career as a financial services executive, yet cowboy traditions ran deep throughout his lineage. His father holds a spot in the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame, and Dan followed in those footsteps as a rodeo announcer.
He remained a committed member of the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association, where he also held a director position. His support extended to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, and he previously served as president of the Granbury Chamber of Commerce.
Beyond that, Dan was a gifted Western artist and sculptor whose creations paid tribute to the cowboy lifestyle. His imprint on Granbury’s arts scene persists today via the yearly Dan Coates Western Art Exhibition and Sale.
His artistic output and imaginative energy remain woven into the fabric of the Lightning C Ranch. Positioned behind the main house is Dan’s art studio, a rustic structure he designed to evoke an old Western saloon. Entering the space feels akin to stepping into a
portion of cowboy poetry.
A Residence Shaped by an Artist and a Decorator
Dan conceived the design for the ranch’s primary home himself, yet bringing that vision to fruition was a joint effort with his wife, Judy Coates, a gifted decorator possessing a natural flair for interiors. Working side by side, Dan and Judy crafted
and assembled a residence that comes across as gathered over time rather than newly built, weaving Western heritage, artwork and reclaimed architectural pieces into an atmosphere that is at once intimate and enduringly classic.
Each material was deliberately selected.
Hand-hewn timbers originating from the 1800s and brought in from Pennsylvania outline the rooms. Historic stone taken from the original AddRan College building—where Texas Christian University’s origins trace back to 1873 in nearby
Thorp Spring—serves as the home’s foundation. Around the residence, Judy’s touch is evident in the deliberate arrangement of furnishings, artwork, antiques and architectural details that harmonize with Dan’s vision.
The roughly 3,450-square-foot main dwelling features two bedrooms and two baths. An upstairs bunkhouse offers extra sleeping quarters and comes with its own half bath. A pool house rests adjacent to the residence, while Dan’s historic art studio sits directly behind it.
The Grounds
The Lightning C Ranch is positioned at an elevation of approximately 1,042 feet, sitting just beneath Comanche Peak, the tallest point in Hood County. That elevated position delivers sweeping views of the neighboring landscape, with sightlines stretching toward downtown Fort Worth on the east, Squaw Creek on the south and Chalk Mountain on the west.
Notable property features include:
● 264± acres featuring over a mile of Neri Road frontage
● Main residence of roughly 3,450 square feet with two bedrooms and two baths

● Dan Coates’ historic art studio
● Private 1.8-acre lake
● Water well yielding around 100 gallons per minute
