Retail Out Of It challenges established ideas about sales, leadership, and accomplishment—and contends that the most powerful outcomes emerge once we stop viewing people as transactions.

Throughout the majority of his professional journey, Michael J. Pozun III had a clear understanding of what defined success: revenue figures, expansion metrics, rankings, job titles, and victories. There was perpetually another target to achieve and another leaderboard to ascend.

When he began working on a sales-focused book, however, what materialized turned out to be something quite different.

In Retail Out Of It: Leadership, Sales, and the Mindset Beyond the Scoreboard, Pozun calls on professionals to rethink many common beliefs about selling, leadership, persuasion, and accomplishment—and poses an unexpectedly straightforward question: What occurs when we remove the transaction element from the relationship?

Pulling from years of experience in leadership, sales, competition, coaching, successes, and setbacks, Pozun examines the assumptions individuals make regarding customers, staff, coworkers, and even themselves. His contention is not that outcomes are irrelevant. They are important.

Rather, it is that people must come first.

Retail Out Of It discards tricks, memorized scripts, and manipulation in favor of inquisitiveness, reliance, dialogue, and authentic interpersonal bonds. It explores how preconceptions affect relationships, why listening frequently trumps speaking, and how leaders can stay intensely competitive without turning every exchange into a mere statistic.

“Somewhere along the way, I realized I wasn’t writing a sales manual anymore,” Pozun said. “I was writing about people. Sales, leadership, parenting, relationships—they keep coming back to many of the same things. Are we listening? Are we making assumptions? Are we trying to understand someone, or are we simply trying to get the outcome we want?”

That insight also prompted Pozun to reexamine his own notion of success. Growing up in Pennsylvania, he recalls being the kid whom not everyone expected to thrive. For years, achievement involved an element of disproving others’ doubts. Competition, titles, figures, and professional milestones became part of the scoreboard.

Eventually, that scoreboard shifted.

“I don’t want this book to prove what I’ve accomplished,” Pozun said. “I want it to help someone else accomplish more.”

That movement—from demonstrating something to contributing something—permeates Retail Out Of It.

The volume draws insights from business, leadership, sports, relationships, and Pozun’s own errors and encounters rather than offering a conventional selling blueprint.

Its relevance extends past sales professionals to managers, executives, entrepreneurs, coaches, and anybody whose achievements hinge on persuading, interacting with, or guiding other individuals.

And Pozun is putting the book’s principles into action. For each paperback and hardcover copy sold, $3 will be contributed—$1 each—to the Alzheimer’s Association, C5 Youth Foundation of Texas, and the ASPCA, supporting causes linked to people, opportunity, and lives that hold value beyond any professional leaderboard.

The book’s ultimate challenge might also be its most straightforward: Pursue the aspiration, not the currency. Because eventually, the numbers fade away.

What endures is the difference we made in people’s lives.
