When a documentary about underfunded public schools gets a boost from celebrity volunteers, it signals a story that resonates far beyond one town. The founders of “It Takes A Village” are turning to a global generosity movement to cross the finish line on their film.
Terrell Lawrence and Lewis T. Powell, the duo behind the highly anticipated documentary “It Takes A Village,” have officially confirmed their involvement in this year’s GivingTuesday. The founders have partnered with the viral “100 Voices in 30 Days” organization, which has been rallying support to help them secure the remaining funds necessary to complete the film.
That campaign kicked off on October 20th, drawing together prominent public figures who donated their time to advance the cause. The fundraising push for GivingTuesday will feature a $20,000 Seed and Spark campaign, slated to begin on November 2nd.
On December 1st — GivingTuesday itself — the Seed and Spark initiative will conclude. The “It Takes A Village” documentary, currently in post-production, will be finished with assistance from volunteers, corporate sponsors, and individual donors.
Based in Georgetown, South Carolina, the film presents interviews with educators and community members whose lives have been shaped by the chronic underfunding of public schools. Founders Lawrence and Powell have built a grassroots movement by broadcasting their vision and passion for the project, and they will be backed by celebrity volunteers drawn from entertainment, sports, fashion, and music. Their goal: to give back to their communities by documenting the stories of those affected by under-resourced schools, especially in predominantly Black and Brown neighborhoods.

About GivingTuesday: “A better future is being built by all of us right now, in the billions of small actions we take each day. Acts of care, love, and understanding extend outward, like the threads of a beautiful tapestry. Whether it’s offering a kind smile, a helping hand, or an hour of your time—these acts have a way of rippling out, becoming part of something much greater. That is the power of radical generosity.
GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. Join the movement and give, whether it’s some of your time, a donation, or the power of your voice in your local community.”
