As producer Ziyuan Ma explained, one of the creative hurdles in Drunken Woman was crafting a sound design strategy capable of supporting the film’s intricate narrative structure while preserving emotional tension. Built around features like time loops and psychological control, the project demanded that the creative team employ sound not just to create atmosphere, but also to deliver narrative signals that steer viewers through alterations in character perception and emotional conditions.
Throughout the production process, Ma led the development of the film’s sound design approach and collaborated with the creative team to weave auditory elements into editing, visual expression, and narrative pacing. By adjusting background noise, ambient sounds, breathing patterns, and musical themes, the production team constructed a multi-layered soundscape that aligns with the protagonist’s shifting psychological experience.
After production wrapped, Drunken Woman was launched on major Chinese streaming platforms. The film earned a spot in the main competition section of the Macau International Film Festival and received the Best International Feature award at the Sanctuary International Film Festival, underlining its acclaim within global film festival circuits.
Director Tang Shuo remarked that the film aimed to balance narrative complexity with the atmospheric needs of the suspense genre.
