Roger A Deakins CBE, ASC, BSC, stands among the most celebrated cinematographers of our time, recognized for his extensive and diverse portfolio. He has earned 16 Oscar nominations and won twice, for Blade Runner 2049 and 1917. Additionally, he has received 17 nominations for the top prize from the American Society of Cinematographers and 11 BAFTA nominations, with five wins. His other Oscar-nominated films include Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners and Sicario; the Coen Brothers’ Fargo; Martin Scorsese’s Kundun; The Reader; Sam Mendes’ Skyfall; and Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, among many others. His British peers have honored him with 11 British Society of Cinematographers (BSC) nominations and seven wins. His other professional accolades include two Independent Spirit Awards, numerous Critics’ awards, and the National Board of Review’s Career Achievement Award. He is the only cinematographer to have received both a CBE and a knighthood from his native England. James Ellis Deakins serves as Roger Deakins’ creative work partner. Born on the East Coast of the United States, she double-majored in Latin and Greek during college, completing a graduate-level Latin course as an undergraduate. After graduating, she began her film career in New York City as a lab technician at DuArt Film Laboratories and later as a script supervisor on set. After moving to Los Angeles, she met Roger Deakins on a film set, launching their creative collaboration. Eventually stepping away from script supervision to fully engage in their partnership, she and Roger developed a distinctive working style that continues to evolve as they pursue new ventures, including a podcast (“Team Deakins”), a website, BYWAYS (a book of still photography), and a visual memoir, REFLECTIONS. James’ natural talent for technology proved invaluable when the industry shifted from film to digital capture. Together, Team Deakins shapes their approach to each film and carries out the plan. James manages the many details that require coordination, allowing Roger to focus on capturing the visuals.
