A touching New Mexico short film was born from friendship, imagination, and a collection of young performers joining forces for another adolescent in their local area
ALBUQUERQUE, NM, UNITED STATES, August 27, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Courage Kit originated from a straightforward concept: a group of young actors wanted to produce something impactful for another teenager within the Children’s Cancer Fund of New Mexico community.
Developed through CCFNM’s Performing Arts initiative, the short film allowed students from its acting courses to apply what they had learned in an authentic production environment. For some, the effort built on earlier experience working on movie sets; for others, it represented their debut performance in a film. Together, they practiced, memorized their parts, collaborated with a professional production team, hit their marks, acted in front of cameras, and experienced the joint effort required to bring a movie to completion.
At its core, the initiative was about solidarity — young artists employing their developing talents to support another youth in their community.
The Courage Kit tracks five young individuals who discover a mysterious container holding seemingly common items. One after another, those objects unveil meanings far deeper than their surface appearance, exploring themes of bravery, friendship, hope, fear, and the burdens people carry during tough times.
The narrative that unfolded behind the camera proved just as significant as the story captured on film.
The young cast had already been developing trust and self-assurance together through CCFNM’s Performing Arts acting program. When the chance arose to produce something for another teenager in the CCFNM network, they united around a common goal and brought that same spirit onto the set.
Then the broader community stepped up around them.
The outstanding team at the Children’s Cancer Fund of New Mexico fully committed to backing the project, assisting wherever necessary and embracing the chance to help the young performers transition their work from the classroom onto the screen. Members of the New Mexico film scene also participated, with directors, crew members, creatives, local enterprises, friends, volunteers, and additional supporters offering their time, gear, expertise, venues, resources, and motivation.
What started with a bunch of children wanting to do something meaningful for another teen evolved into a much wider community effort centered on helping these young performers craft something they could take pride in.
Aaron Alexander, who instructs acting through CCFNM’s Performing Arts program, wrote and directed the film, while Performing Arts Program Director Abby Max assisted in steering the project from the classroom into production. Their role involved creating the opportunity and support framework that enabled the young performers to apply their developing abilities in practice.
The core of the project, however, stayed with the children themselves.
They arrived prepared. They studied their scenes. They encouraged each other. Whether they came with prior film experience or were appearing in front of a movie camera for the first time, they approached the effort as performers and partners.
For the Children’s Cancer Fund of New Mexico, The Courage Kit embodies what its Performing Arts program aims to deliver: chances for young people to create, perform, build confidence, form friendships, and experience something bigger than the circumstances that originally brought their families to CCFNM.
The Performing Arts program provides opportunities in acting, dance, music, modeling, and other creative fields. The Courage Kit illustrates what can occur when those possibilities extend beyond the classroom and young artists are given the chance to put their abilities into action.
Audiences will get to view that work on the big screen when The Courage Kit screens at the 9th Annual Mindfield Film Festival on Saturday, August 29, during the 1:00 p.m. screening block at Guild Cinema in Albuquerque.
For the cast, the screening represents more than just the completion of a film.
It marks the moment when something they created together becomes something they can share with everyone else.
And for the community that helped bring The Courage Kit to life, it serves as a reminder that sometimes supporting someone doesn’t require having the perfect words.
