Most people think an art career means selling paintings to galleries, but the industry is far broader — and one Australian lifestyle site is setting out to prove it.

Mark Marando, a Sydney-based lifestyle web portal, is launching a series of features on unconventional art-related professions, beginning with storyboard artists.
Published by Australian bloggers, Mark Marando is an online magazine covering lifestyle, travel and fashion for web readers with a keen eye. Beyond those topics, the platform also delves into health, diet, fitness, home and garden matters, as well as practical guides like how to choose a chiropractor or a home builder. The site aims to offer something for everyone.
Also worth a look: Pop icon Tiffany makes her film debut in a bizarre dark comedy about a drag queen stealing her career and New York Festivals TV & Film Awards names 2027 Grand Jury as it turns 70.
The decision to explore alternative careers in the art world came after readers repeatedly asked what other job paths exist in the field — beyond the traditional route of selling work directly to galleries.
Kicking off the series is Dean Mortensen, founder of Scenes By Dean, who works as a storyboard and visual concepts artist. Based in Sydney, Mortensen has spent more than three decades serving as an art director in both advertising and film. His portfolio includes feature films, serial dramas, short films and television commercials, and his skill set goes well beyond basic storyboard storytelling.
Mortensen also produces visual concepts for events and activation agencies, works with film production companies, and helps retail brands develop concept activations. Operating as a freelance storyboard artist in Sydney, he uses his deep experience to help clients visualize projects and bring them to life. Mark Marando, the magazine’s founder, spoke with Eleven Media about the move: “The website blog has been experiencing great growth in visitors to the online magazine over recent years. The management team have listened to the feedback survey from website visitors as to the content and experience they seek. The team have seen the importance of also staying at the leading edge of technology to keep in touch with clients the way they expect and to communicate in the best way possible the array of information provided to all visitors to the website.”
