Marking the 30th anniversary of the beloved, Peabody and Emmy Award–winning PBS series, “What’s The Story, Wishbone?” offers a peek behind the curtain of the groundbreaking children’s program that turned classic literature into must-watch TV and became a generational cultural sensation.
The documentary will be shown at select Regal locations nationwide, with participating cities that include Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, Fort Worth, Washington, D.C., Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Sacramento, San Antonio, Stockton, Modesto, San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and others.
These Regal screenings represent the newest milestone in a banner year for the film. “What’s The Story, Wishbone?” initially aired on over 200 public TV stations across the U.S. from May 27 to June 9, then launched its global digital release on June 10. The documentary shot to No. 1 among documentaries on Apple and held a Top 10 position for more than two months.
The Blu-ray Collector’s Edition comes packed with bonus content: a long-lost interview with Wishbone, three feature-length commentary tracks, fresh interviews about collaborating with Wishbone, archival behind-the-scenes footage, and a collectible mini-poster. The commentaries include a director’s track featuring Joey Stewart (“Wishbone,” “The Night of the White Pants,” “The Seventh Day,” “Walker, Texas Ranger”), a track with Larry Brantley (the voice of Wishbone), and a reunion commentary that brings together original series creator Rick Duffield, series and documentary producer Betty Buckley (Emmy and Peabody award–winning producer and founder of Women in Film Dallas), Brantley, and Stewart.

Originally airing in the mid-1990s, Wishbone reimagined classic works of literature through the escapades of a Jack Russell Terrier, introducing a generation of kids to tales ranging from Sherlock Holmes to The Odyssey. This documentary revisits the creative team behind the series and shows how an ambitious concept evolved into a lasting cultural landmark. Through the perspectives of writers, directors, producers, and cast, the film explores how everything came together—and how a project that often felt chaotic ended up meaning so much to an entire generation.
As part of the documentary’s global digital rollout, the filmmakers contributed 10% of net proceeds to Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation’s top children’s literacy nonprofit.
