This marks the first offering from the band’s eagerly awaited debut album, Over Hill and Hollow, which is scheduled for an October 2, 2026 release.
Frontman Josh Bower penned “Holy Road,” which delves into the universal conflict between fear and love, urging listeners to greet life’s path with bravery, optimism, and direction.
“I started writing from a place of internal conflict over mistakes I had made,” Bower shares. “It grew into a tale of good versus evil, love versus fear. At its core, it’s about trusting yourself, picking love, and pressing ahead no matter what.”
The track’s inspiration came after friend Dan Redmond introduced Bower to a bluegrass-style rhythm. That became the first song Bower had ever written in that style, helping steer the band toward a fresh musical direction.
Curiously, the song was conceived in a church parking lot.
“I enjoy finding quiet spots to write,” Bower recalls. “I was playing the riff that turned into ‘Holy Road,’ and the words just flowed. Looking back, maybe writing it outside that church seeped into the song.”
Recorded at Sonic Ranch Studios in Tornillo, Texas, “Holy Road” was produced by Ted Hutt, mixed by Ted Hutt and Ryan Mall, and mastered by Dave Cooley.
Blending bluegrass rhythms with rock-and-roll energy, the single showcases the genre-crossing sound that has become the signature of Ponder the Albatross.
“Our music doesn’t really slot into a single category,” Bower says. “The inspiration shifts from song to song, but in the end, it’s all rock and roll to me.”
The song gained extra significance as Bower watched it take shape with contributions from his bandmates—his brother Nick Bower on drums, Eric Vrtis on bass, and Luke Lindholm on violin.
“Hearing what the band does to turn the song into what it becomes is incredible. Those moments made me realize we had something unique.”
One line perfectly sums up the essence of the record:
“On the Road, you might die, but on the Road is where you’ll fly… The Holy Road will leave you bright eyed… Get on the road, and fly high – Because you’re lost until you’re found.”
“The Holy Road stands for the path we’re meant to follow,” Bower explains. “Sometimes we stray, but anything is possible if you choose love, have faith, and keep moving forward.”
The band chose “Holy Road” as its debut single because it captures the spirit of Ponder the Albatross while giving listeners a taste of the themes of adventure, wanderlust, and personal growth that define Over Hill & Hollow.
To promote the release, the band will roll out live performance videos and additional visual content.
Momentum is building after appearances at Hillberry Music Festival and a supporting slot for Andy Frasco and the U.N. earlier this year. Upcoming shows include GoreFest in Colorado, the Original Ozark Folk Festival in Arkansas, and Dee’s Lounge in Nashville.
