Penned by frontman Josh Bower, “Holy Road” delves into the timeless conflict between fear and love, urging listeners to approach life’s journey with bravery, optimism, and a sense of direction.
“I originally began writing from an internal conflict over errors I had made,” Bower says. “It grew into a tale of good versus evil, love versus fear. At its core, it’s about trusting yourself, opting for love, and pressing ahead no matter what.”
The track’s inspiration took root when friend Dan Redmond introduced Bower to a bluegrass-style groove. That moment produced the first song Bower had ever composed in that style, helping steer the band toward a fresh musical path.
In a twist of irony, the piece itself was conceived in a church parking lot.
“I enjoy finding quiet spots to work on music,” Bower recalls. “I was playing the riff that turned into ‘Holy Road,’ and the words just flowed. Looking back, maybe writing it outside that church worked its way into the song.”
Recorded at Sonic Ranch Studios in Tornillo, Texas, “Holy Road” was produced by Ted Hutt, mixed by Ted Hutt and Ryan Mall, and mastered by Dave Cooley.
Marrying bluegrass rhythms with rock-and-roll drive, the single highlights the genre-blending sound that has come to define Ponder the Albatross.
“Our music doesn’t really slot into a single category,” says Bower. “The inspiration varies from song to song, but ultimately it’s all rock and roll to me.”
The track gained extra significance as Bower watched it come alive through the contributions of his bandmates, including his brother Nick Bower on drums, Eric Vrtis on bass, and Luke Lindholm on violin.
“Hearing what the band does to reshape the song into what it becomes is incredible. Those moments made me realize we had something unique.”
One line perfectly encapsulates the essence of the record:
“On the Road, you might die, but on the Road is where you’ll fly… The Holy Road will leave you bright eyed… Get on the road, and fly high – Because you’re lost until you’re found.”
“The Holy Road stands for the journey we are meant to take,” Bower explains. “Sometimes we go off course, but anything becomes possible when you choose love, have faith, and keep progressing.”
The band chose “Holy Road” as its debut single because it captures the essence of Ponder the Albatross while introducing audiences to the themes of adventure, wanderlust, and personal change that run through Over Hill & Hollow.
To back the release, the group will roll out live performance clips and additional visuals.
Momentum is building after appearances at Hillberry Music Festival and a run supporting Andy Frasco and the U.N. earlier this year. Forthcoming shows include GoreFest in Colorado, the Original Ozark Folk Festival in Arkansas, and Dee’s Lounge in Nashville.
