In a crowded streaming landscape, few films dare to ask what happens when a lifetime of shared struggle still isn’t enough. Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution arm of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, has now made that question visceral with the release of the thriller Lie of the Land — available across North American digital HD internet, DVD, cable, and satellite platforms as of October 23, 2026.
The film is a contained thriller centered on Kath and Matthew Ward, an aging Irish couple who have run out of options. Penniless, childless, and burdened by years of bad investments, they face the grim reality that they can no longer sustain their farm. Their home — a property that has belonged to Kath’s family for generations — has fallen into complete disrepair. Still grieving the recent death of her mother, Kath is consumed by regret and resentment, which fuels constant arguments with her husband. Matthew, by contrast, is a dreamer who blames his farming misfortunes on bad luck. He pins his last hopes on a charismatic stranger named Gabriel Shepherd, who arrives at the farm promising a fresh start abroad, free of debt. But there is a catch: to make it happen, Shepherd must take the last of the couple’s money — a cash inheritance left to them by Kath’s mother. When a last-minute change of heart sets in, the Wards realize that Shepherd was never their guardian angel. Suddenly, they are fighting to save both each other and the home they were ready to abandon.
Directed by John Carlin, Lie of the Land was written by Tara Hegarty and produced by Margaret McGoldrick and Chris Patterson. The cast features Ali White as Kath Ward, Nigel O’Neill as Matthew Ward, Barry John Kinsella as Shepherd, and Abe Smyth as Boyle.
“Lie of the Land is a story about two people who have spent their whole lives building a life together and suddenly find themselves with very little left to hold onto,” said filmmaker John Carlin. “What begins as an attempt to escape their old life becomes a fight to survive it and, ultimately, a decision about what home, marriage and staying together really mean when there’s nothing left to lose.”
Freestyle Digital Media negotiated a deal to acquire Lie of the Land directly with the filmmakers.
